L E A P
L earning E nrichment and A cceleration P rogram
WHAT?
Beginning with the 2016-17 school year, St. Malachy will offer the L E A P program.  The LEAP program offers academic enrichment and acceleration experiences to those students in grades 3-8 who may be in need of them, based on a careful evaluation of the students’ abilities through approved testing measures.   St. Malachy will offer these experiences in the areas of Reading, Math, and Science.  A student may qualify for services in one or more academic areas.  The program is intended to provide academic growth as an addition to the regular curriculum.  Parents of students who are eligible for the program will be notified yet this spring following the testing procedures and will be given the option of L E A P for their children for the next school year.  Mrs.  Roghair will teach the reading and math classes, and Mrs. Simmons will teach the Science classes in the school library using academic materials and activities designed to meet the learning needs of highly capable students.

“Field trips provide students with a window to the real world that they don't get in the classroom, and they can help students understand real-world applications of seemingly abstract topics such as in math and science. Spending time outside the classroom doesn't mean students aren't learning knowledge that could show up on standardized tests. Several studies have shown that students retain more knowledge through the type of experience-based learning that field trips provide when compared to in-class learning.” ~ excerpt from U.S. News and World Report

5/12/16

Dear Parents,
This week our Kindergarten and Preschool held a literacy night.  Families came and ate dinner, read books and created crafts based on Mo Willems books!  There was lots of energy and excitement coming from the gym!
I love seeing children, at any grade level, get so excited about books!  I hope your children get as excited as mine do about reading new books.  I enjoy taking my children to the library to sign up for the annual summer reading program.  Take some time, in the next week, to make a summer reading plan.  How will you keep your children excited about reading through the summer?
