Dear Parents,
Parent teacher conferences are right around the corner.  This year we will ask that you sign up for your conference through our digital portal.   We are so excited to offer this service this year to parents.  The teachers are excited using the system too.  We hope that you find this an easy way to let your child’s teacher know when you would like to attend your conference.
A few things to note:
Middle School Announcements - Creston Middle School sends out daily announcements.  Mrs. Lane will be placing these announcements on our Power School Daily Bulletin page.  If you would like to receive this by email daily please register on Power School under email notifications.  If you forgot your Power School password please contact Mrs. Lane to have your password reset. https://ps-ddm.gwaea.org/public/
Technology Committee - We are putting together a technology committee.  This committee will help plan and implement a technology plan for St. Malachy School.  Members of this committee will be from the school, school board and parish. I am seeking parents who would like to be on this committee.  Please contact me if you are interested. jsimmons@crestonstmalachy.org
Kitchen Substitute Needed: St. Malachy School is looking for extra help in the food service area.  The job will be to serve food, assist in food preparation, clean tables and wash dishes.  We would like to get a sub list developed so if there is ever a day that the school is short staffed we could call on you to help out.  Please call Jennifer Simmons if you are interested at 641-782-7125, email Mrs. Simmons at jsimmons@crestonstmalachy.org  or stop by the school’s office.  Thank you!
Marketing and Recruitment committee - We are seeking some new members for our marketing and recruitment committee.  If you are interested in helping us to recruitment new families to St. Malachy school, then this committee is for you!  Please contact me if you are interested. jsimmons@crestonstmalachy.org
SCRIP - Christmas is around the corner. If you are wanting to order they are due by Monday at 9am and they will be back on Thursday.
Book Fair - The Book Fair is coming next week!  Please watch for a flyer and note from Mrs. Roghair.  Students will be able to purchase books all week long.  Parents feel free to purchase books throughout the week and during conferences as well.  We are in need of a few parents to help with the Book Fair during conferences.  Please use this link to sign up for a time to come help on November 5th. www.SignUpGenius.com/go/20F0544A9AA2FAAFD0-fall

Back to the Future Day

Back to the Future Day
October 21, 2015

October 21, 2015 marks the date that Marty McFly arrived in the future Hill Valley. Thirty years ago we predicted flying cars, Hoverboards and dehydrated Pizza Hut pizza. Now here we are in 2015 and Back to the Future got more items right than they did wrong.

As a school we are celebrating this iconic movie by having our own Back to the Future day at St. Malachy School!  This is a great way to get our students thinking, predicting and designing what technology they think will be around 30 years from now.  Some of our students will be dressing in a manner they believe people will dress for Mass in the year 2045.  Students will be drawing and writing what they think they will look like and what job they will have in 2045.  We will have students designing futuristic cities and transportation.  It’s a time to also appreciate the past.  Where have we been and where are we going? Students will be comparing and contrasting 1950’s 1980’s and 2015.  They will watch clips of the Jetsons and Back to the Future.  With these clips students will discuss what people from the 1980’s thought the future would look like.  Will we get our predictions right for the next 30 year jump?

After our Mass each class will bring up an item to place in the St. Malachy 2015-2045 time capsule.  We will then place this capsule in a safe place in the school with a sign that reads “Do Not Open until 2045.  Our current 8th graders are planning to have a time capsule opening party thirty years from now. I hope I can join them!

Our lunch is futuristic on Wednesday!
Doc Brown Spaghetti or Marty McFly Turkey Wrap
Lightsaber breadstick
Orange Flying Saucers
Broccoli with Plutonium Cheese Sauce
Lorrain’s Organic Milk

Lastly, our students will get to go to the future room. In our library we will have lots of high tech educational devices for our students to interact with and explore.  During this time students will learn about devices that are available now for our use and discuss the science and engineering necessary to create these devices but also use these devices.

Dear Parents,
Communication is Key
We are aware that our website is down.  We have been continually working on the issue and it is being addressed and repaired in the quickest manner possible. We hope to have it working again very soon.
Facebook: This is a wonderful communication tool.  We are in the process of using Facebook as another avenue for continual communication with our families.  Please find us on Facebook and like us to receive updates.  https://www.facebook.com/St-Malachy-School-284388665005357/
Teacher blogs: Are you receiving weekly emails from your child’s teacher blog? If not please go to their blog and submit your email to join the subscription.  This is a teacher's main tool for communicating with parents the great things going on in their classroom.
Principal notes:  Do you get this newsletter each week?  If not please sign up to receive a weekly email from this blog as well!  I will use this as my main tool for communicating with families.
Text message: Do you receive periodic text messages from this school?  We use this as an avenue for reminders to important updates.  If you are not receiving texts please contact Mrs. Lane in our school office and she will get you signed up.
A few things to note:
Writers in the Middle - Writers in the Middle is an event that provides middle school students to hear from a well-known published author about his or her writing. In addition to hearing the author, the students break into small groups and share writing of their own that they bring with them. Students then receive feedback, generate new ideas, and polish their writing. Writers in the Middle is sponsored by Graceland University.  We have 9 students from the middle school attending this event: 8th grade: Beau Thompson, Hannah Walsh, & Danika Schultes   7th grade:Sierra Myers, Cassie Ralston, & Molly Sickels   6th grade: Aiden Evans, Halle Evans, & Sophia Patterson.
Back to the Future Day - October 21, 2015 - Students may dress how they think people might dress in for Mass in 2045. (please make sure attire is Mass appropriate)

Holy Spirit Church - Saturday, October 17th and Sunday, October 18th after Mass.  Students 4th grade and older are eligible to serve.  Students who are already serving may also come as a refresher class.
Conferences: Be watching for a portal to electronically sign up for your child’s conferences.
Pictures - October 27th - Picture Retakes and Preschool Pictures.
Spirit Day - October 23rd - Wear your gear $1
Mass - October 21st - 8th grade
Early Out - October 21st - 2:10pm

Thank you for all you do in making St. Malachy School great!

Have a Blessed weekend,
