Back to the Future Day
October 21, 2015
October 21, 2015 marks the date that Marty McFly arrived in the future Hill Valley. Thirty years ago we predicted flying cars, Hoverboards and dehydrated Pizza Hut pizza. Now here we are in 2015 and Back to the Future got more items right than they did wrong.
As a school we are celebrating this iconic movie by having our own Back to the Future day at St. Malachy School! This is a great way to get our students thinking, predicting and designing what technology they think will be around 30 years from now. Some of our students will be dressing in a manner they believe people will dress for Mass in the year 2045. Students will be drawing and writing what they think they will look like and what job they will have in 2045. We will have students designing futuristic cities and transportation. It’s a time to also appreciate the past. Where have we been and where are we going? Students will be comparing and contrasting 1950’s 1980’s and 2015. They will watch clips of the Jetsons and Back to the Future. With these clips students will discuss what people from the 1980’s thought the future would look like. Will we get our predictions right for the next 30 year jump?
After our Mass each class will bring up an item to place in the St. Malachy 2015-2045 time capsule. We will then place this capsule in a safe place in the school with a sign that reads “Do Not Open until 2045. Our current 8th graders are planning to have a time capsule opening party thirty years from now. I hope I can join them!
Our lunch is futuristic on Wednesday!
Doc Brown Spaghetti or Marty McFly Turkey Wrap
Lightsaber breadstick
Orange Flying Saucers
Broccoli with Plutonium Cheese Sauce
Lorrain’s Organic Milk
Lastly, our students will get to go to the future room. In our library we will have lots of high tech educational devices for our students to interact with and explore. During this time students will learn about devices that are available now for our use and discuss the science and engineering necessary to create these devices but also use these devices.
