Dear Parents,
Yesterday our teachers participated in a professional development day. Many topics were discussed and much was learned. In the morning Denise Mulcahy came down and lead our effective teaching strategies lessons. This lesson focused on differentiation in the classroom. Teachers also learned some new teaching strategies to take back to their classrooms. St. Malachy teachers are learning 2-3 new strategies every 2-3 weeks. After they learn the strategy they take these ideas back to the classroom and practice. Finally we spend some time reflecting about how the strategy went and ways to improve before we learn the next new set of strategies.
In the afternoon we discussed the future implications of the NGSS science by looking at new textbook samples. Another team of teachers looked at our Religion textbooks and new curriculum that is available. Our final team of teachers looked at individual needs in the classrooms such as Iowa History, Handwriting without Tears and cross-curricular connections with novels.
Lastly, Deb Frazee, STEM Hub Manager came to our professional development to discuss some new Scale-Ups being offered to local schools. We plan to turn in some applications for some of these STEM Scale-Ups to implement at St. Malachy.

With the help of a daft dog, a beautiful bird and a friendly frog, her belongings are retrieved. But this broomstick is not meant for five and – CRACK! – it snaps in two.
