2/4/2016

Dear Parents,
We are halfway through Catholic Schools Week!  I was bummed that we lost a day of celebrating but I sure did enjoy my PJ day at home.
We have rescheduled the fifth grade Living Rosary to this Friday at 8:30am.  Fifth grade students will be reading the Joyful Mysteries, each student is representing a bead on the Rosary.  I’m looking for to the Teachers vs 8th grade students Thursday afternoon.  Teachers and 8th grade students will compete in a basketball shootout and a trivia challenge.  We hope both of these new events will become annual traditions.
St. Malachy will host an Open House/Soup Supper on February 3rd.  There will be representatives available to discuss enrollment options for the 2016-2017 school year.    Following the Open House there will be Family Lenten activities for all RE and St. Malachy Students.
I am very excited about celebrating Grandparents Day Mass this Friday at 1:30.  Please meet us at the church.  We will start bussing students to the church just after 1pm.  We will have a cookie reception following Mass.  Students will dismiss from the church so please plan accordingly.

A Letter from our Diocese:
Nigeria.gifLent 2016
Dear Catholic school and parish religious formation students and families,
For the past three years, we have held a Lenten Project called Building the Kingdom which has supported a high school seminary, Holy Ghost Juniorate, in Nigeria.  The Diocese of Des Moines has a special connection with the seminary since we currently have three Holy Ghost Fathers ministering in our diocese.
We have been overwhelmed with the support from so many families throughout the Diocese of Des Moines.  During the last three years, we have raised nearly $80,000!  The leadership at Holy Ghost Juniorate are extremely grateful and continually keep in contact by sending photographs and information about the repairs and construction they have accomplished with the donated funds.
Support for Building the Kingdom has resulted in the refurbishing of the academic building, living quarters and restroom facilities, which were in need of extensive repair and updating.
Bishop Pates saw the facilities prior to any renovation and he could not believe anyone could live in and/or learn in facilities that were in such poor condition. While much has been done, the needs are great.
As Pope Frances continues to remind us, “…our lives must bear witness to His love for all our brothers and sisters.” We ask for your continued prayers and support for the Building the Kingdom project during this Lent 2016.  The funds we raise will go towards building a recreation area and opportunities for the students to play sports, especially a basketball court and a lawn tennis court.
We have and we continue to make a huge difference in Building the Kingdom – God’s Kingdom.
Thank you,
Tracy Bonday, Superintendent of Schools
John Gaffney, Director, Department of Evangelization & Catechesis

CYC logo 2.pngJust as a reminder, because many families may be interested, Catholic Youth Camp opens up camp registration this Sunday, January 31st at noon. Though it is a long way off from summer, they open up early to allow families to coordinate summer vacations, sports, etc. All of the information you need can be found at STMcenter.com.  If you want to contact them to ask any questions, they will be in their office this Sunday during registration launch. The CYC program is a great way for youth to combine faith and fun. Activities include horses, canoeing, archery, zip lining, rock climbing in addition to daily Mass and reconciliation and much more. All grades 3rd through 12 are invited to attend. And for those that are 16 or older, you are invited to be a camp counselor as well. Again, see STMcenter.com for more information.
